Hidden Storage Ideas: Making the Most of Your Ottoman Bed Space

Hidden Storage Ideas: Making the Most of Your Ottoman Bed Space - Adeline Waterson

Start with the things taking up too much cupboard space: spare bedding, seasonal clothes and travel bags. Give each category a defined place beneath your ottoman bed, then arrange everything so you can remove one item without unpacking the rest.

The most useful hidden storage is easy to maintain. These ideas help you use the compartment thoughtfully, protect what goes inside and keep the belongings you need within comfortable reach.

Measure the Compartment Before Choosing Containers

Empty the base and check the usable internal length, width and height, following the bed’s instructions for safe access. Measure around centre supports and lifting hardware; the mattress size does not tell you which storage boxes will fit underneath.

Allow for container lids, handles and enough room to lift each box out. A bag that fits when empty may bulge above the available height once filled.

Sketch the compartment on paper and pencil in your proposed containers. Check their external dimensions, including projecting clips. This small step helps prevent buying a matching set that wastes space or obstructs the closing platform.

Arrange Storage Around the Opening Direction

Adeline Waterson’s ottoman storage beds use gas-assisted end-lift storage. Plan your layout around access from the foot of the bed, keeping that standing area clear.

For example, the Florence Ottoman Storage Bed has a gas-lift mechanism that opens from the foot end. A practical arrangement for this design is:

  • Nearest the opening: spare sheets and throws you reach for regularly.

  • In the middle: guest bedding and clothing for the coming season.

  • Further back: lightweight belongings needed only occasionally, provided you can retrieve them safely.

Choose bags with accessible handles for the less convenient areas. Keep everyday essentials elsewhere if retrieving them would mean repeatedly opening the bed during a busy morning.

Make Complete Bedding Kits

Fold a duvet cover, fitted sheet and matching pillowcases together, then tuck the set into one of its pillowcases. This keeps the pieces together and saves searching through separate piles on laundry day.

For a guest room, place the bedding set and a clean towel in a labelled fabric bag. Keep spare pillows alongside it in suitable protective covers, with enough room to preserve their shape.

Label each kit by mattress size or room, especially if your household uses similar-looking linen. “Guest double” is more useful than “spare bedding”. Keep bulky duvets in their own appropriately sized bags so removing a sheet set does not disturb everything around it.

Give Seasonal Clothes Their Own Space

Create separate bags for warm-weather clothing and winter layers. Group smaller accessories, such as scarves and gloves, in a pouch within the relevant bag so they stay with the clothes you wear them with.

Fold garments to suit the container. In a shallow box, arrange folded items upright where practical so you can see each one from above. Avoid building a tall pile with your favourite jumper trapped underneath.

If you use vacuum bags, check the garment or bedding manufacturer’s storage guidance first. Compression is not appropriate for every material or filling. Choose an uncompressed storage bag whenever the care instructions advise against it, and avoid packing delicate or structured pieces simply because there is room.

Use the Empty Space Inside Luggage

A suitcase can become a container within the compartment, provided its full dimensions fit safely. Check the wheels and handles as well as the main case, and make sure you can lift it out comfortably when packed.

Use its interior for travel-related belongings: packing cubes, a foldable beach bag or spare holiday clothing. You will have a useful starting point for your next trip without occupying another box.

Keep anything needed between holidays outside the suitcase. Otherwise, a quick search means lifting the bed, removing the case and opening another layer. Tuck smaller travel bags inside larger ones where this remains manageable.

Contain Shoes and Small Accessories

Use a separate compartmented organiser for occasional shoes, keeping pairs together and away from clean linen. Choose a container that accommodates their shape without forcing heels or uppers against the lid.

Small fabric pouches work well for belts, spare cushion covers and other loose accessories. Group related pouches in a shallow container so they cannot disappear behind larger bags.

Avoid a general “miscellaneous” box. Give each container a specific purpose and label the surface visible when the bed opens. For opaque bags, a short contents list on a removable tag makes finding things easier without unzipping every one.

Protect the Contents and Keep the Mechanism Clear

Put away only clean, completely dry belongings. Allow freshly laundered items to dry thoroughly before packing, and clean and dry shoes and luggage before returning them to storage. Follow individual care labels when choosing covers or containers.

Keep belongings below the moving platform and away from hinges, struts and lifting arms. Tuck in loose straps and handles. Never force the bed shut over an overfilled bag or use the compartment to store dense, heavy items without checking its permitted load.

Follow the supplied operating instructions, keep children and pets clear during access, and never climb inside. Adeline Waterson’s guide to operating an ottoman storage bed also explains why abnormal movement or a platform that will not remain supported needs attention before further use.

Reset the Layout When the Seasons Change

Use your clothing or duvet swap as a reminder to review the whole compartment. Remove anything you no longer need, update labels and clean the empty storage area according to the bed’s care instructions.

If belongings smell musty or feel damp, take them out and address the moisture source before repacking. Fragrance sachets should never substitute for finding the cause.

Leave enough spare room to return items easily. A tightly packed arrangement may look efficient on the first day, but a little flexibility makes it much easier to keep organised.

FAQs

Can I stack storage boxes inside the bed?

Only where the available height, load limit and mechanism clearance allow. Keep stacks stable and manageable. A single layer usually makes individual boxes easier to retrieve.

Can I organise the space without buying new containers?

Yes. Reuse clean pillowcases, suitable zipped bags and existing shallow boxes. Check their condition and fit before filling them.

How should two people share ottoman storage?

Assign each person labelled containers and reserve a separate section for shared linen. Divide space according to what needs storing, with both people’s regular items accessible.

Can I keep a mattress topper underneath?

Only if its care instructions permit the proposed folding or rolling method and it fits within the compartment’s limits. Avoid forcing it into a compressed shape.
