Sometimes it is the detail that makes the bed. Stud beds take an otherwise clean upholstered headboard and line its edges with a row of individual studs, adding a quiet border of texture that catches the light. It is a small flourish, but it is the kind of finishing touch that lifts a bedroom from functional to considered. Our stud beds are made to order here in the UK, so the fabric, colour and headboard height are all yours to choose.

Stud detailing, up close

The defining feature of a stud bed is the studded border that runs along the headboard. Each stud sits individually along the line of the frame, creating a regular, jewelled edge that frames the upholstery behind it. The effect is decorative rather than structural — the strength of the bed comes from the upholstered frame beneath — but it changes how the headboard reads, giving it a more tailored, finished appearance.

Because the studs follow the line of the headboard, the detailing works equally well on a straight-edged panel and on more shaped profiles. It is a look that leans classic without committing to the deep buttoning of a chesterfield, which makes stud beds a good middle ground if you want ornamentation without a fully traditional feel.

Upholstery and fabric choice

Underneath the studs, the headboard is fully upholstered, and the fabric you choose shapes the whole character of the bed. Plush Velvet and Crushed Velvet give a richer sheen that plays nicely against a studded edge; Crushed Ice adds a subtler texture; and woven fabrics such as Chenille, Naples, Coniston and Dumfries offer a softer, matt finish. Pairing studs with velvet is a particularly popular combination — the trim reads beautifully against the pile — so stud beds sit naturally alongside our wider range of fabric beds and velvet beds.

A colour for every scheme

The studded border is a constant, but the colour is where you can really direct the look. Neutral tones such as grey, silver, cream and beige keep the bed calm and versatile, while black and navy make a more confident statement. For something with more personality, emerald green, mustard, teal or pink all sit well against a detailed headboard, with maroon, mocha, brown, champagne, mink and white completing the palette.

Sizes, storage and headboard height

Stud beds are available in every standard size — Single (3ft), Small Double (4ft), Double (4ft6), King (5ft) and Super King (6ft) — and the studded detail scales convincingly across them.

If storage matters, look at the base. Depending on the model you can specify a gas-lift ottoman base that lifts to reveal the interior, or divan drawers in a 2-drawer, 4-drawer or footend-drawer layout. Either keeps the studded headboard as the centrepiece while clearing space in wardrobes and cupboards.

Headboard height is the last choice, with 48", 54" floor-standing and 60" options in the range. A taller headboard gives the studs more line length to follow and suits higher ceilings; a lower one keeps things compact.

Choosing your stud bed

Begin with how much storage you need, since that determines the base. Next, settle on a fabric family — velvet if you want sheen beside the studs, a woven fabric for a softer surface — and then a colour. Finally, pick a headboard height in proportion to the room. Every choice is made to order, so you are specifying a bed rather than picking from a fixed run.

Why choose Adeline Waterson

Adeline Waterson beds are designed and made in the UK and built to order, which is why the choice of fabrics, colours, sizes, storage and headboard heights is so wide. A bed is a long-term purchase, so a 10-year warranty upgrade option is available alongside our standard warranty options, and delivery is available across the UK. If a studded border appeals but you would like to compare related looks, our buttoned beds and diamond beds offer different takes on a detailed headboard, all within the same made-to-order framework.
