Not every bed needs to make a loud statement. Panel beds are defined by a clean, flat upholstered headboard — straight-lined and unfussy, with the fabric doing the talking rather than the shape. It is among the most versatile headboard styles we make, and panel headboard beds slot into almost any bedroom scheme, modern or traditional. Each one is made to order in the UK.

The appeal of a straight-lined headboard

A panel headboard is exactly what it sounds like: a headboard arranged as a flat upholstered panel, with crisp edges and little ornamentation. Without curves, wings or buttoning to draw the eye, the look relies on proportion, fabric and colour — which is precisely why it is so flexible. A panel headboard bed can read as minimal and contemporary in grey Chenille, or warm and classic in navy velvet, without the underlying frame changing at all.

This simplicity also makes panel beds the quiet backbone of a bedroom. They pair easily with bold wallpaper, coloured walls or patterned bedding, because the headboard itself is not competing for attention. It is a style that ages well, too — with nothing ornate to date it, a panel headboard tends to sit comfortably in a room for years.

Upholstered in the fabric you want

Because the headboard is a broad, flat surface, the fabric you choose has a real bearing on the finished look. Plush Velvet and Crushed Velvet bring sheen and depth across a wide panel; Crushed Ice adds a fine texture; and woven fabrics such as Chenille, Naples, Coniston and Dumfries give a softer, matt finish that is well suited to a clean-lined design. Among fabric beds, a woven upholstery on a panel headboard is a hard combination to beat if you prefer your bed to sit quietly in the room.

Colour, from neutral to statement

The panel style is available across the full colour range. Grey, silver, cream and beige are the easy neutrals; black and navy anchor a room; and emerald green, mustard, teal, pink, maroon, mocha, brown, champagne, mink and white let you push the bed forward or blend it in. With no decorative shaping to constrain the palette, the colour choice is entirely yours.

Sizes, storage and headboard height

Panel beds come in every standard size — Single (3ft), Small Double (4ft), Double (4ft6), King (5ft) and Super King (6ft).

Storage depends on the base. A gas-lift ottoman base lifts to reveal the interior beneath the mattress, while divan drawers — in a 2-drawer, 4-drawer or footend-drawer arrangement — keep frequently used things to hand. Whichever you choose, the straight-lined headboard stays clean and unbroken.

Headboard height is the final decision, with 48", 54" floor-standing and 60" options across the range. Because a panel headboard has no shaping, a taller version simply means more fabric on show — useful if you want the bed to dominate, or if you like to sit up and read.

How to choose your panel bed

Think first about the room. If the walls and bedding are busy, a woven fabric in a neutral colour on a panel headboard bed will sit calmly behind them; if the bed is meant to be the focal point, a velvet in a stronger colour will do it. Then settle on storage and headboard height. Because every bed is made to order, you can specify each of these independently rather than compromising on a pre-built combination.

Why choose Adeline Waterson

All of our beds are designed and made in the UK and built to order, which is what gives you such a broad choice of fabrics, colours, sizes, storage and headboard heights across our upholstered beds. If you would like to compare the panel look against something with more shaping, our winged beds and chesterfield beds cover the more profiled end of the range. A 10-year warranty upgrade option is available alongside standard warranty options, and delivery is available across the UK.
